Obituary of Paula Christie Motley
1961 - 2022 On Tuesday June 7, 2022, Paula Motley passed away in her Carmel home while surrounded by her family. Paula was a wonderful mother, wife, and friend who had the gift of making everyone feel important, cared about, and at ease. Paula was born in 1961 in Ridgewood, New Jersey as the second of four daughters to Robert and Ann Mosch. In her youth, Paula moved to Chatsworth, CA with her family, where she eventually met her husband, Tom Motley, to whom she was married for over 40 years. Tom and Paula raised their two sons, Carter and Chasen, in Carmel, where Paula helped build their lives - first as a stay at home mother and then an educator across the Monterey Peninsula and beyond. Paula’s professional life was dedicated to the education of students and teachers alike. She was a beloved teacher at Pacific Groves’ Forest Grove Elementary and Carmel’s River and Tularcitos Elementary Schools. Paula loved the classroom and had a way of making her lessons come alive, doing anything she could to bring out each student’s interest for a subject. Paula’s enthusiasm for collaborating with other teachers led her to dedicate the rest of her career to helping new teachers succeed. Starting this work with the beginning teacher organization, BTSA, Paula helped teachers at the local school and district levels, later moving into county and state positions with broader impacts. When her health forced her to retire from full-time work, Paula continued to support new educators by teaching remote classes at National University. Throughout her career as an educator, administrator, and ‘teacher for teachers,’ Paula never lost her love for the classroom and the kids that fill it. Paula’s enduring kindness, humor, and strength will be missed by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing her. On most days you could find her enjoying a book on the sunny patio of the beautiful Carmel home that she and Tom created or sharing a glass of wine with family and friends in front of the fireplace. Paula was happiest when the family was together enjoying food and conversation around the dinner table - her family will miss those nights the most. Paula was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ann, and is survived by her husband, Tom, sons Carter (Jana) and Chasen (Jenna), sisters Allison (Dave), Audrey (Steve), and Karla (Brent) and her cherished extended family. The family wishes to thank the staff of Central Coast VNA & Hospice, Dr. Vagelos (Stanford Health Care), and Dr. Gerber (Central Coast Cardiology). Their special care, effort to exhaust any option, and support throughout Paula’s health challenges is appreciated and will not be forgotten. Paula’s memorial will be celebrated by her immediate family, as were her wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to any the organizations that were close to Paula’s heart: ● American Heart Association ● American Cancer Society ● Stanford Medicine ● Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula (via Montage Health) ● VNA Central Coast
