JAMES EDWARD OSBORNE December 18, 1937 – March 10, 2021
James Edward Osborne passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 10, 2021. He was born in Evanston, Illinois on December 18, 1937 to Grace Treichler Osborne and Ralph Hubert Osborne and grew up in Indiana and Illinois. Jim had many fond childhood memories with cousins and grandparents both in towns and family farms in upstate New York. He graduated from York High School, Northwestern University and Cornell University. After business school, Jim joined IBM; he transferred to Houston to work at NASA, where he met and married Marian Powell. Together they had two children. After IBM, he enjoyed work in construction, as a business manager at St John’s the Divine Church and in computer sales. As an empty nester, he moved to Steamboat in 1994, where he worked for Steamboat Ski Corp, enjoyed the Over the Hill Gang and was an active Steamboat Ambassador. Through mutual friends, he met San Diego resident Ann Clark; they married in 2001 and Ann’s wedding present to Jim of a model train reignited a boyhood hobby. In retirement, Jim was an active member of the San Diego 3-Railers Train Club and was licensed to service MTH electric trains.
Jim was a dedicated father, visiting his children wherever in the world they went. He cherished being a grandparent to both his and Ann’s grandchildren over the last two decades. In addition to his love for Ann and their families, he is remembered fondly for his vivid storytelling, model train addiction, and general silliness.
Jim is survived by his wife, Ann; his two children: Tom Osborne and wife Michelle and Katherine Osborne Valdez and husband Pablo; his brother J. Thomas Osborne; his stepdaughter Michele Duffy and husband Steve; and grandchildren: Anna and Olivia Valdez; Sean, Colin and Kiera Duffy; and Amanda Wood Dattilo and husband Jim.
A memorial service will be held in San Diego in June 2021.
For those wishing, memorial gifts may be directed to the charity of their choice.
