Anne L Messmer
February 7, 1930 – March 21, 2021
Anne Louise Messmer passed away on March 21, 2021 in San Diego, CA, at the age of 91, having lived a long, rich life. She was born to Hazel Wilson Grime and Charles Grime on February 7, 1930 in Waterbury, CT. She graduated with a degree in Library Science from Larson Jr. College in 1950 after which she worked at Yale University Library. For five years she was a proofreader in the newspaper industry. She later moved to Cleveland, OH for work and it was there she met her husband, Donald Messmer, on a blind date. They married July 13, 1957. They resided in Ohio and Maryland, eventually settling in San Diego, CA in 1984. Wherever she lived, she was a passionate bowler and always enjoyed time with her bowling buddies at the local alley. She loved her crossword puzzles, card games and was a crafter of many varieties. Her special talent was learning and remembering the names of everyone around her, especially impressive during the last 4+ years of her life at the Remington retirement community. During their 63 years of marriage, she and Don enjoyed travel to many parts of the world, from China to the Bahamas to New Zealand and to Europe. Anne especially enjoyed family time in Dorset, Vermont, to celebrate July 4th and the Christmas holidays. She only had kind words for those around her, loved being with family and friends, and her mind stayed strong to the end, including her quiet sense of humor. Anne is survived by her husband Donald, brother Chuck (Bev), and children Diane and Thomas (Michelle) and her three grandchildren Lydia, Max and Lily. She is preceded in death by her siblings Janet Wallace (George) and William (Sharon) Grime. A service will not be scheduled due to the current COVID-19 environment. A Catholic mass in her honor at St. Gregory the Great Church in San Diego is scheduled for July 24, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. Those wishing to celebrate and honor Anne's life may donate in her name to your favorite charity.
